Abstract
POLYETHYLENE glycol (PEG) has been used to induce the fusion of protoplasts of higher plants1,2. Ahkong et al.3 have also observed that PEG will cause hen erythrocytes to fuse to form binucleate and multinucleate cells. The availability of a common chemical agent that can be used effectively for the fusion of both animal cells and plant protoplasts has prompted us to investigate the possibility that PEG may likewise induce interspecific fusion between hen erythrocytes and yeast protoplasts.
