Abstract
IT is well known that infection with vaccinia or one of the other animal pox viruses produces a high degree of immunity, associated with the appearance of neutralizing antibody in the serum. Recently, Collier, McClean and Vallet1 have shown that neutralizing antibody can also be elicited by vaccinia virus inactivated by ultra-violet light. But attempts to obtain immunizing material free from virus particles have had little success2,3. This communication describes a virus-free immunizing antigen extracted from tissues infected with rabbit-pox or vaccinia viruses. The injection of this soluble material into rabbits resulted in the formation of sera with a neutralizing antibody titre against vaccinia comparable with that found in animals convalescent from rabbit-pox infection.
