Abstract
Abstract. Dealing with heterogeneous students often implies an adaptation of the sight structures of classroom instruction. Yet, in comparison to sight structures, the quality of deep structures (classroom management or learning support) is more important to students' learning outcomes. However, differential effects of deep structures of learning have rarely been studied. Therefore, this study examines general effects of classroom management and learning support as well as differential effects on students with immigrant backgrounds. Using longitudinal data of 3.483 students from 155 secondary school classes, mathematics achievement was assessed in 9th and 10th grade. Classroom management and learning support were assessed via student and partially via teacher ratings. We found positive effects of classroom management on achievement for all students. In addition, cross-level interactions of latent multilevel analyses revealed that students with immigrant backgrounds benefitted more from effective classroom management and strong support with regard to their achievement compared to students without immigrant backgrounds – with prior achievement controlled. This indicates a compensating function of deep structures of instruction.
