Electronic Properties of the Layered Perovskite Ruthenates: Correlated Electron Physics Approaching the Low-Disorder Limit

Abstract

We present a brief review of the physics that is now accessible in the layered perovskite ruthenates that have been the focus of our research for the past few years. The main theme of the work has been the discovery of novel ground states that have an extreme sensitivity to disorder. We discuss these developments and the lessons that they provide for the wider field of correlated electrons in solids.

  15. Although the bands have dominantly Ru character, this is only an approximation. In fact, as stressed by Ref. 16, they have an unusually high admixture of oxygen p character for the active bands in transition metal oxides. This is argued to play a very important role in determining the magnetic properties, but will not be discussed in detail here.
