Indigo carmine has been reported to be helpful in the evaluation of Barrett's esophagitis, flat adenomas, gastric cancer, collagenous colitis, and malabsorption [1,3–6]. Absorptive stains, such as methylene blue, toluidine blue, cresyl violet, and Lugol's iodine, are absorbed actively into the mucosal cells.
