Material and Methods
The minipig was chosen as model for this experiment because its bone regeneration rate (1.2-1.5 μm/day) is comparable to that of human beings (1.0-1.5 μm/day).92, 93, 94, 95 Forty-eight sinus augmentations were performed on 24 adult minipigs (18 months old). The animal study protocol was approved by the local animal committee (Government of Midfrankonia, Ansbach, Germany, approval 31-05/00).
For all surgical interventions, the animals were anesthetized by intravenous injection of Immobilon
Discussion
Sinus augmentation procedures have reached widespread use and have resulted in the highest success rates of all augmentation procedures.1, 12, 70, 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109 The ability of autogenous bone to be substituted by a bone substitute for this indication, and the type of bone substitute that can be successfully used in sinus augmentation procedures, has been previously discussed in numerous studies.7, 40, 45, 49, 56, 68, 73, 91, 99, 102, 104, 107, 108, 110, 111
Conclusion
Thus, over the entire observation period, no positive effect in the PRP group could be detected. This result is comparable to previous studies on this topic.74, 82, 82, 83, 84, 134, 142, 167, 168
