Liver transplantationComplicationsCorrelation Between Serum Magnesium Levels and Hepatic Encephalopathy in Immediate Post Liver Transplantation Period
Section snippets
Methods
The survey was conducted retrospectively using a medical records database to examine information from pre- to the seventh postoperative day. Inclusion criteria were patients who were 18 to 75 years of age undergoing liver transplantation between 2007 and 2009. There was no discrimination in relation to the technique or venous reconstruction. Exclusion criteria were patients who were younger than 18 years, those who died within 48 hours after surgery, those who had fulminant hepatitis before
Results
Among 83 evaluated patients, 20.48% were females and 79.52% males. The average age was 49.70 ± 11.08 (range, 18 to 71) years. The average MELD score was 23.90 ± 4.93 (range, 14.00 to 39.00) years. The most frequent diagnoses were cirrhosis due to alcohol (16.87%), cirrhosis due to alcohol and hepatitis C (14.46%), hepatitis C, and hepatocellular carcinoma (14.46%), hepatitis C (10.84%), cirrhosis due to alcohol, hepatitis C and hepatic cancer (9.64%), and cryptogenic cirrhosis (6.02%). Discussion
Neurological complications post-liver transplantation have been investigated for several years.10 Bronster et al11 reported that 20.1% of the patients showed neurological complications after liver transplantation, with encephalopathy being the most common (11.8%). Yilmaz et al12 noted that 16% of patients experienced neurological complications.
Ghaus et al2 described encephalopathy to occurs among 71% of patients in the immediate post-transplant period. This study also revealed a significant

Complications of Proton Pump Inhibitor Therapy
2017, GastroenterologyCitation Excerpt :The second mechanism involves reduction of vitamin B12 due to reduced gastric acidity. Low levels of vitamin B12 may be predictive of the occurrence of HE after liver transplantation.72 Acid suppression is theorized to produce parietal cell hyperplasia, leading to histologic changes and polyposis.
Proton Pump Inhibitors Increase Risk for Hepatic Encephalopathy in Patients With Cirrhosis in A Population Study
2017, GastroenterologyCitation Excerpt :Prolonged PPI use has been shown to affect the physiologic absorption of different micronutrients such as magnesium and vitamin B12.45 Low levels of serum magnesium are a predictive factor of the occurrence of HE after liver transplantation.46 All PPIs were associated with hypomagnesemia, with esomeprazole having the lowest risk and pantoprazole having the highest risk.47
