Conclusion

In our study, we did not state that the surfactants currently used in household products pose a high and widespread-risk to freshwater ecosystems and hence need immediate and substantiate regulation. However, we indicated that among the current technical mixtures, LAS poses the highest potential risk, at least in terms of toxic background levels that might contribute to mixture effects in river reaches exposed to high shares of wastewater.
