Abstract

Increasing interest of automobile manufacturers in investing in sub-Saharan African markets raises the question of suitable production strategies. These are influenced by the trend towards electric drives, which offer opportunities for market entry in small series. We present a method to identify the configuration parameters within a sustainable production strategy development for sub-Saharan Africa. With the knowledge of these parameters, trade-off decisions in strategic planning are enabled. These are developed based on the prevailing boundary conditions and the resulting requirements. Iterations between literature and expert knowledge ensure that essential parameters have been identified. Using this method, configuration parameters for a electric vehicles production site in Ghana are developed. This vehicle, which will to a large extent be manufactured locally, was developed to meet the needs of people in rural sub-Saharan Africa, and to create local added value.
