The first onslaught of salinity stress in glycophytes is a growing osmotic tension which is followed by the rather slower ionic stress (Van Zelm et al., 2020). Osmotic stress and ionic toxicity restrict the uptake of water and mineral nutrients, which leads to the inhibition of various biochemical and physiological processes (Ahmad et al., 2022). Salinity negatively affects stomatal regulation which leads to a reduction of CO2 diffusion, carbohydrates assimilation, chlorophyll content, and PSII activity (Singh and Sharma, 2018).
