Frequency-doubling in self-induced waveguides in lithium niobate

Abstract

Efficient frequency-doubling is experimentally demonstrated in presence of beam self-trapping in congruent lithium niobate crystal. The self-trapping is induced by the generated second harmonic beam via photorefractive effect under an external applied field. The local space charge field distribution, formed by the second harmonic beam, is shown to efficiently trap both wavelengths. The dynamics of self-focusing is studied along with the power evolution of the second harmonic beam. Fast tuning of phase matching conditions in the written waveguide is realized by an externally applied voltage also used for the photorefractive confinement.

The light beam experiences then a self-focusing effect which become more and more effective, until a stable situation is reached: the beam propagates without diffracting, confined into a self-written waveguide. These solitonic waveguides are stable even after the beam is turned off, exhibit very low losses and have the advantage that they can be created anywhere in the bulk of the substrate [21,23–38]. In this work we present some results of a feasibility of fixing soliton waveguides using iron doping.

These soliton waveguides have been already used both for realizing switching devices [117] and for enhancing the second harmonic conversion efficiency through a confinement of pumping pulses within solitonic channels written by the second harmonic ones [118–121]. Pettazzi et al. [118] demonstrated efficient second harmonic generation in a biased congruent lithium niobate crystals in which 2D PR self-focusing not only improves efficiency of the parametric process due to beams confinement and self-alignment, but at the same time prevents beams distortion. The light-induced trapping gives rise to a waveguide that compensates the defocusing effect generated by the photovoltaic field, confines and self-aligns both fundamental (FM) and second harmonic (SH) beams that results in an enhancement of the conversion efficiency.
