Abstract

Rapid prototyping is known by many terms as per the technologies involved, like SFF or solid freeform fabrication, FF or freeform fabrication, digital fabrication, AFF or automated freeform fabrication, 3D printing, solid imaging, layer based manufacturing, laser prototyping and additive manufacturing. Rapid prototyping is a revolutionary and powerful technology with wide range of applications. The importance of rapid prototyping is to quickly fabricate complex-shaped, 3D parts directly from computer aided design models, which is based upon decomposition of 3D computer models data into thin cross-sectional layers, followed by physically forming the layers and stacking them up; “layer by layer technique”. The process of prototyping involves quick building up of a prototype or working models for the purpose of testing the various design features, ideas, concepts, functionality, output and performance. This paper covers possibilities of using RP technologies based on biomaterial. Using RP in biomedical is a quite complex task which implies a multidisciplinary approach and very good knowledge of engineering as well as medicine.

    Citation Excerpt :

Undoubtedly, manufacturing complex cellular structures is inseparable from the development of 3D printing technologies. In the past few decades, 3D printing has emerged as a technique that can be used to manufacture structures with complex geometries from a CAD file [37,38]. This method can be applied to a wide range of materials, from polymers to metals and also ceramics.

Additive manufacturing process has undergone outstanding advancement recently and becomes more widespread in different industries for parts production. Particularly due to some advantages compared to traditional manufacturing techniques such as the possibility of fabricating complex geometries, the rational use of materials, the relatively low time consumption and the inherent user friendliness [10]. The vat photopolymerization method is currently used moderately in range of commercial and industrial sectors and can efficiently manufacture complex objects with low cost in a relatively short time [11].

New processing methods that overcome these problems are the key to prepare porous BN-matrix ceramics. In the past 20 years, additive manufacturing (AM) has become an useful method for producing complex geometric components [6,7]. Mask projection stereolithography (MP-SL) is a type of SL technology that creates a mask pattern, on which the ceramic green body could be based to cure from a high-resolution DLP using a digital micromirror device (DMD).

  • Fabrication and characterisation of ceramics via low-cost DLP 3D printing

2018, Boletin de la Sociedad Espanola de Ceramica y Vidrio
    Citation Excerpt :

SLS has been reported as an adequate technique for high quality ceramics, although the systems are rather expensive. In the case of SLA, there are rather economic systems to produce ceramics with high output resolution and surface quality [9–12], and moreover the systems could be customised by replacing the laser and using DLP projectors which can also produce high quality ceramics at low cost [13]. Regarding SLA 3D printing of ceramics, Al2O3-based resins were characterised by Brady et al. to rapid prototype ceramics with the assistance of a SLA machine [11] and later some ceramic systems were studied [17].
