  • Evolutionary dynamics and purposeful design: The case of the Margaret River Region, Australia

2022, Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management
    Citation Excerpt :

Destination design may be conceived as an attempt to adopt current thinking around “service design” (Stickdorn & Schneider, 2011) as well as “design science” (Fesenmaier & Xiang, 2017) to tourism destinations in order to improve tourist experience bundles. Technological development has also led to a new connectivity of artefacts and objects, and has given birth to technology-driven concepts of smart destinations (Boes et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2013), “whereby ICT is touted as the driver and foundation for destination innovation and competitiveness” (Xiang et al., 2015, p. 143). Coherent with the focus on visitor experiences is also the emphasis on aesthetics (Breiby, 2014; Kirillova & Lehto, 2015), servicescapes (Lin, 2004; Mossberg, 2008), atmospheres (Pfister, 2013), storytelling (Woodside & Megehee, 2009) and other enablers, which are operationalised in transformative toolsets (Pearce & Zare, 2017; Stickdorn & Schneider, 2011).

  • Post-COVID-19 recovery of island tourism using a smart tourism destination framework

2022, Journal of Destination Marketing and Management
    Citation Excerpt :

Although technology should not be the only focus of a smart destination, the role of technology in the creation of smartness is more than relevant. Technology can allow destinations to offer visitors personalized experiences while making them aware of the available offers at the destination (Xiang et al., 2015). Technology and data can also be used by the destination stakeholders to make more qualified decisions (Xiang et al., 2015) and can act as a coordination mechanism for knowledge sharing (Del Chiappa & Baggio, 2015).
