Letter to the EditorDo defective B cells contribute to reduced Treg cells and autoimmunity in patients with Common Variable Immunodeficiency?
Highlights
► A recent report highlights the Treg requirement for competent regulatory B cells. ► Common Variable Immunodeficiency patients provide a good model to test this hypothesis. ► CVID patients with autoimmunity have reduced Treg cells and switched memory B cells. ► They also have expanded populations of immature B cells (CD19+ CD24hi, CD38hi, CD5+). ► This supports the hypothesis that competent B cells contribute to Treg responses.

Common variable immunodeficiency and autoimmunity - an inconvenient truth
2014, Autoimmunity ReviewsCitation Excerpt :It has been postulated that the reduced number of Treg cells may be driven by a defect in B cell homeostasis, in which an elevated number of regulatory B cells expressing CD19+CD24hiCD38hi were found in CVID patients with autoimmunity, reflected an expanded regulatory B cell pool with reduced IL-10 production. In addition, the numbers of switched memory B cells, CD19+CD27+IgD− were reduced in the group with autoimmunity, though not exclusively [59]. Impaired differentiation, maturation, and function of dendritic cells was also reported to be involved in the pathology of CVID and autoimmunity [60].
