Data Source
Our retrospective cohort study used claims data from the National Health Insurance (NHI) service in Korea. NHI is mandatory health insurance operated by the Korean government, covering most of the Korean population (97%), and offers data that include patient demographics, disease diagnoses, and medical treatment claims, including prescriptions and procedures for inpatient and outpatient care. Moreover, NHI provides an annual medical check-up program to individuals aged 20 or older with
Baseline Characteristics
From January 2009 to December 2009, a total of 9,923,521 individuals, who had undergone a medical checkup, were enrolled in the study and followed until December 2017. The baseline characteristics of the study population according to the presence of atopic diseases are described in Table 1. Individuals with atopic diseases were more likely to be older, female, have an urban residence, have never smoked, abstained from alcohol consumption, and have a higher BMI, lower income, and more
Discussion
This population-based study of atopic diseases and IBD has highlighted a novel association of IBD with atopic diseases including AD, AR, and asthma. The presence of any atopic disease in patients increased the risk for IBD, whereas an increase in the number of atopic diseases progressively increased the risk for IBD. Moreover, subgroup analyses revealed that the impact of AR on UC was greater in those who were elderly, male, metabolically unhealthy, and current smokers, whereas the impact of AD
