Functional decline and dependency
Functional status is the foundation of geriatric medicine and has a direct impact on an elder's ability to live successfully within their environment [25]. Compromised functional status is also a logical consequence of abuse and neglect regardless of whether the immediate impact of mistreatment is physical, psychologic, or both. Physical health, mental health, and functional ability are distinct but often inseparable factors in the aging elderly population. Older people who have difficulty

Elder abuse and neglect are recently recognized forms of family violence, but much less is known compared with child or spousal abuse. Little is known about how patients of elder abuse and neglect interact with the health care system. The victims of elder abuse and neglect are more likely to have multiple complaints and frequent presentations in ambulatory care setting. Mouton and Espino [58] found that older women who experienced abuse were likely to consult medical practitioners with
Role of health care professionals
Health care professionals play a critical role in the detection and management of elder abuse and neglect. Physicians are frequently in contact with elderly patients and are ideally situated to detect abuse and neglect and to play a significant role in the detection, management, and prevention of elder abuse and neglect. Elder abuse and neglect may be difficult to identify unless there are obvious signs of physical injury. Without a higher index of suspicion, elder abuse and neglect goes
Summary
Recognition of elder abuse and neglect among health care professionals has been a relatively recent phenomenon. Each year, millions of elderly persons suffer as the result of abuse and neglect. Their quality of life is severely jeopardized in the form of worsened functional status and progressive dependency, poorly rated self-health, and feelings of helplessness and from the vicious cycle of social isolation, stress, and further psychologic decline. 2020, Aggression and Violent BehaviorCitation Excerpt :Similarly, those individuals who experience elder abuse will be referred to as victims. Elder abuse can result in psychological damage, financial devastation, and physical harm including death; indeed, elder abuse victims experience a mortality rate three times higher than that of non-victims (Dong, 2005; Lachs, Williams, O'Brien, Pillemer, and Charlson, 1998). A recent meta-analysis found a pooled prevalence rate of 15.7% (Yon, Mikton, Gassoumis, & Wilber, 2017) and a representative national sample from the United States found that 1.7% of older adults were victims of more than one type of abuse in the past year (Williams, Racette, Mernandez-Tejada, & Acierno, 2017).
