2021, European Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive BiologyCitation Excerpt :When reproducing a progressive and severe hypoxemia in near-term fetal sheep, we observed a significant rise in fetal S100B and c-TnT serum levels while pH decreases, and lactates rise. During labor, several adaptive mechanisms such as heart rate decelerations or tachycardia, allow fetuses to withstand hypoxia [21,22]. Following a perinatal HI insult, oxygen deprivation causes myocardial damage and neonates develop cardiovascular dysfunction as part of the multiorgan failure showcasing HIE [23,24].
Pulsoximetric monitoring of fetal arterial oxygen saturation and fetal pulse at stage II of labor to predict acidosis in newborn Holstein Friesian calves
2020, TheriogenologyCitation Excerpt :Possibly, the compensatory ability of the heart is limited at heart rates >120 bpm, which results in acidosis. In human medicine, tachycardia is discussed as a strong predictor for fetal acidemia, particularly in combination with decelerations [32–34]. The pulse oximeter used in the current study was previously evaluated in newborn calves by attaching the sensor to the interdigital space of the hoof [19].
