Abstract

The first endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was described around five decades ago. Initially, ERCP went through an era of expanding use due to improvement in technique and availability of training opportunities. However, over the last 10 years the use of ERCP has reached a plateau. Development of computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and most importantly, endoscopic ultrasound has limited the diagnostic role of ERCP, and even the established indications of therapeutic ERCP are now being challenged. In this chapter, we will review how the development of these new modalities have affected the role of ERCP in management of both benign and malignant pancreatobiliary diseases.
