The behavior of horses, as with other species, can be an important indicator of their welfare. Obvious changes occur with disease process, but others can reflect subtle changes in environment too. Stereotypies are relatively common in horses and are generally considered to be an indicator of poor welfare. Recent research indicates that the situation may be much more complicated than that. Other major factors that impact the welfare of horses are also described.
