Abstract

Tumor microenvironment (TME) has received more and more attention as modern medical research has begun to understand its importance in tumorigenesis. The occurrence, development, metastasis and drug resistance of tumors are closely related to TME. TME is a complicated system, including nontumor cells, their secreted cytokines, extracellular matrix, among other components. The concepts of wholism and multitarget regulation in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) make it well suited to the regulation of TME. In this paper, the authors reviewed the progress of TME research and the effect of TCM on TME, providing some views of Chinese medicine in antitumor research.

The unique physical and chemical properties and the adjustable size of nanomicelles can be used to achieve drug transportation to tumor sites by enhancing permeability, retention and nanomaterial-induced endothelial leakiness [9]. The tumor microenvironment has a higher temperature than non-tumor tissue, which provides an opportunity to design new nanomicelles with temperature sensitivity [10] and may passively target tumor tissue. Because of the tunable volume phase transition temperature (VPTT), nanocarriers containing the thermosensitive polymer poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) have been extensively studied.

It is well accepted that TCM can reduce the toxicity of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, enhance the antitumor effect of these therapies, alleviate tumor-induced clinical symptoms, and prolong the survival time of advanced-stage cancer patients [12]. Though the exact mechanism of TCM is not very clear, increasing data has shown that it may relate with regulation of tumor immune environment, the novel target according to the theory of “immune-reediting” [13,14]. Our previous work indicated that cinnamon extract was effective for leukemia treatment [15].
