Abstract

The paper presents an investigation of collective dislocation dynamics effects during plastic deformation, that arise from long-range dislocation interactions and lead to stochastic slip localization on a mesoscopic scale. The characteristics of these effects are related to microstructural properties. Stochastic integration with respect to time and space gives their macroscopic signature in terms of the corresponding fluctuations of the external stress and strain. The theoretical results are compared to experimental findings on monocrystals deformed in single slip. The critical stress fluctuations associated with the Portevin-Le Chaˆtelier effect (serrated yielding) are discussed. Quantitative agreement with the experiments is good.

Similarly, the boundary inhomogeneity and roughness generate boundary fluctuation, cf. [17]. Finally, the microscopic heterogeneous slip modes induced by long range dislocation interactions generate fluctuations on the microscale, their analysis requiring stochastic approach, cf. [18]. Using the potential offered by the novel experimental techniques, it is possible to identify physical phenomena and to describe the mechanisms of degradation and fatigue damage development [19].

This brings the plastic flow back to the classical, smooth regime (cf. Komnik et al., 1985; Reed and Walsh, 1988; Reed et al., 1991). Discontinuous plastic flow (Domain I) was investigated – among others – by Basinski (1957), Schwarz and Mitchell (1974), Reed and Walsh (1988), Hähner and Zeiser, 1997, Zeiser and Hähner, 1997), Benallal et al. (2006), Skoczen et al. (2008, 2010, 2014), Tabin et al. (2016, 2017). A broad discussion of DPF in terms of the threshold temperatures and the change of dislocations mode was carried out by Obst and Nyilas (1991, 1998).
