Generalised distal limb vessel thrombosis in two cows with digital and inner organ infections

Case 1

In cow 1, a sole ulcer on the lateral claw of the left hindlimb had been resected by the local veterinarian under i.v. regional anaesthesia using 400 mg lidocaine hydrochloride (Xylanaest purum 2%, Gebro Pharma) and i.v. regional antibiosis using 500 mg of oxytetracycline (Oxyject 10%, Boehringer Ingelheim). In addition, enrofloxacin (500 mg/kg body weight; Baytril 10%, Bayer AG) had been given systemically, but the lameness had not improved, and the cow was transferred to our clinic on October

Case 2

Cow 2 was lame for a few days, showing a purulent pododermatitis with separation of the abaxial wall of the left lateral hindclaw. In addition, swellings on three limbs were observed. The cow had been treated with several antibiotics (20,000 IU procain-benzylpenicillin/kg body weight, Serocillin, Norbrook; ceftiofur sodium: 1 mg/kg body weight) and flunixin meglumine (2.2 mg/kg body weight, Finadyne, Essex Pharma) systemically by the local veterinarian prior to admittance to our clinic in April

    Empirically, this form of antibiotic treatment seems to have a positive impact on infections of the foot, although it was not superior to other forms of antibiotic administration for the treatment of digital dermatitis.44 In any case, the antibiotic concentration should be kept low enough to minimize the risk of vascular irritation, thrombosis, and soft tissue necrosis (eg, penicillin G, 100,000 to a maximum of 106 IU per foot).27,40 In case of resection surgery through the sole–heel area, the claw horn is removed using a disc until only a paper-thin horn layer remains.

    This frequency can also be used to examine all the joints of calves that are only a few weeks old. For evaluation of deeper structures or large swellings, a 5.0 or 3.5 MHz convex or sector transducer is advised because of the greater depth of penetration.1–21,27,29,30,32,40,41 These latter frequencies are required for assessment of thick muscle bellies in the trunk, the hip, thigh, and shoulder region in adult cattle and severe swelling anywhere on the limb.29,30,42
