Risk factors for current wheeze among school children (6–7 and 13–14 years old) in Khuzestan, Iran
2021, Public Health in PracticeCitation Excerpt :Simultaneous occurrence of asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema causes the symptoms to appear more severely and have an adverse effect on quality of life [8]. In recent decades, the world has seen a significant increase in allergic diseases, especially in children, and developing countries are no exception [9]. According to studies conducted in the Middle East, the prevalence of allergic diseases in the region is usually lower than in developed countries, however, it is on the rise [10,11].
Epidemiology of asthma hospitalizations among American Indian and Alaska native people and the general United States population
2014, ChestCitation Excerpt :Improved asthma treatment and education, however, would likely not explain the more rapidly declining rates among AI/AN people compared with the general US population. Another possible reason is increased use of inhaled corticosteroids24,25; however, the largest decreases were observed for both AI/AN and US infants and children 1 to 4 years of age, and physicians are generally more reluctant to prescribe inhaled corticosteroids for young children.24,26 Declining rates among young children may result from more accurate discharge diagnoses.
Lack of Piped Water and Sewage Services is Associated with Pediatric Lower Respiratory Tract Infection in Alaska
2008, Journal of PediatricsCitation Excerpt :During 1999-2000, approximately 94% of Alaska Native infants were enrolled in Medicaid at some point during their first 2 years of life versus 46% of non-Native infants. The Alaska Division of Medical Assistance provided a master file that consisted of data for all persons younger than 2 years of age and enrolled in Medicaid from October 1, 1998, through June 30, 2003.4 The master file was then linked to an outcomes data file containing all provider, inpatient facility, and outpatient clinic approved billing claims for International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision (ICD-9) codes 466 (acute bronchitis and bronchiolitis), 480-487.1 (pneumonia and influenza with pneumonia), 490 (bronchitis not specified as acute or chronic), and 510-511 (empyema and pleurisy).
Asthma in American Indian adults: The strong heart study
2007, ChestCitation Excerpt :However underdiagnosis of asthma in our study may have been significant; 4% of participants of participants in the third examination of the SHS had probable but previously undiagnosed asthma. Gessner and Neeno6 also reported underdiagnosis of asthma in the Alaska Native population, as areas with resident pediatricians and previous participation in asthma research reported a fivefold to 11-fold higher prevalence of asthma than other areas. Underdiagnosis of asthma is an important issue that also has been identified in other populations of older non-American Indian adults: a previous US study22 found 4% of the elderly population had undiagnosed asthma.
