Scheme 1.

, obtained by the primary antituberculous agent Isoniazid, have been used as monoanionic ligands (L) to prepare copper(II) 2 and nickel(II) 3 octahedral complexes of stoichiometry [MeL2(H2O)2]. Their antimycobacterial in vitro activity was evaluated against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv in comparison with the ligands. Complexes 2a, 2b, 2f, 3b, 3d and 3g displayed MIC values ⩽0.2 μg/mL.

Hydrazones and their metal complexes show possible uses as catalysts [1,2] molecular sensors [3], luminescent probes [4] and also as therapeutic compounds [5]. Also, transition metal hydrazone complexes have been the topic for a long time because of their antimicrobial and antitumor activities [6–10]. Hydrazones Schiff bases likewise attract progressing consideration because of their underlying variety and coordination behaviour.

The FT-IR spectrum of complex 1 is shown in Fig. S1. The complex shows a broad and strong band in the range of 3200–3600 cm−1 which is due to the asymmetric and symmetric NH2 stretching vibrations with contribution from stretching vibrations of adsorbed water molecules [31,32]. Previously, Brandan et al. [33] reported that the asymmetric and symmetric N-H stretching modes in 5-acetamido-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-sulphonamide compound occur at about 3301 cm−1 and 3093 cm−1, respectively.

Since all complexes have not exhibited increased activity as compared to parent ligand which explain the fact that, steric and pharmacokinetic parameters also play a crucial role for potency of an antimycobacterial agent [54]. Yempalla et al. [55] identified nitrofuranyl methylpiperazine derivatives as potent anti-TB agents. These compounds exhibited potent MIC in the range of 0.17–0.0072 μM against H37Rv Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), nonreplicating and resistant strains.
