Mitigating ammonia emissions from typical broiler and layer manure management – A system analysis
2019, Waste ManagementCitation Excerpt :In addition to the effect of lowering the NH3 emissions, Li et al. (2008a) found that the use of an additive of 5 g kg−1 probiotics could increase the egg production rate and the average egg weight (p < 0.01), while the NH3 emissions were reduced by 21%. These additives such as zeolite or yucca could reduce NH3 emissions by binding nitrogenous cations like NH4+, which would otherwise be released from manure (Amon et al., 1997). Dietary probiotics could decrease urease activity in the small intestinal contents, thus leading suppression of urea hydrolysis and subsequently reduced ammonia production (Yeo and Kim, 1997).
Effect of litter density and foot health program on ammonia emissions in broiler chickens
2018, Journal of Applied Poultry ResearchCitation Excerpt :These results suggest that this dietary supplement improves feed digestibility and nutrient absorption, and thus decreases the N content in excreta. Furthermore, studies by Cabuk et al. [21] and Amon et al. [37] found that adding 120 and 165 g of Yucca schidigera extract per ton of feed significantly decreases ammonia emissions on farms by a range of 16 to 50% over those treatments without Yucca schidigera extract. Other research by Roldan and Rodriguez [38] suggests that Yucca schidigera extract can also be included in the drinking water for birds.
Analyses of odours from concentrated animal feeding operations: A review
2018, Atmospheric EnvironmentCitation Excerpt :Separating the single components using chromatography implies the loss of the global odour information. Anyway, it is useful to know all the substances that take part of an odorous mixture in order to improve abatement strategies (Amon et al., 1997; Bibbiani and Russo, 2012; Pillai et al., 2012) and find correlations between odours and chemical composition (Blanes-Vidal et al., 2009; Zahn et al., 2001). GC-MS can be integrated with olfactometry (GC-MS/O) to understand which are the odour-determining compounds (Bulliner et al., 2006; Laor et al., 2008; S. Zhang et al., 2010a).
The effect of feed supplementation with zakarpacki zeolite (clinoptilolite) on percentages of T and B lymphocytes and cytokine concentrations in poultry
2017, Poultry ScienceCitation Excerpt :Zakarpacki zeolite (clinoptilolite) is used in poultry farming, primarily in intensive production of broiler chickens. It is used to reduce emissions of toxic gases, mainly ammonia (Amon et al., 1997; McCrory and Hobbs, 2001), as a feed additive (Christaki et al., 2001; Christaki et al., 2006; Suchy et al., 2006) and as a litter component (Ullman et al., 2004; Eleroglu and Yalcin, 2005). Zeolite has also been shown to increase the bioavailability of minerals (Leach et al., 1990; Mumpton, 1999), resulting in stimulation of numerous metabolic pathways in the organism.
