Introduction and background

Apart from the general fast-paced evolution of computing and networking technology which we have seen lead to developments like personal computing, multimedia and the internet, two specific events have occurred in the last 5 years which have highlighted the difficulties and nontrivial nature of the information retrieval task. The first of these has been the huge growth in the WWW with huge volumes of (mostly textual) information deployed on a globally distributed network of computers and

General

Most of the efforts reported by groups in all TREC conferences consist of a series of experiments incrementing their own particular in-house approach to the IR task. One of the interesting efforts in TREC-6 came from the group from RMIT (Fuller et al., 1998) who re-examined retrieval effectiveness for all the individual ingredients we assume make up a contemporary approach to IR. The RMIT group divided documents into multiple overlapping passages of differing lengths and used these as

And finally…

As one of the final points to distill from the collective efforts in TREC-6 it is interesting to note the spread of the use of INQUERY as an underlying search engine for participants as a complement to the strong base of users using SMART, though some others are also used such as the MG system by RMIT (Fuller et al., 1998) and OHSU (Hersh & Day, 1998) and the ZPRISE system by all groups in the interactive track. Some participants also have their own home-grown systems such as IBM (Brown &
