Abstract

Cyclodextrins (CDs) have been found to form inclusion complexes with various polymers with high specificity to give stoichiometric compounds in crystalline states. In these complexes, polymer chains were threaded into cyclodextrins and recognized by the host. For example, α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) formed complexes with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) of molecular weight higher than 200, although β-CD did not form complexes with PEG of any molecular weight. However, β-CD formed complexes with poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) of various molecular weights with which α-CD did not form complexes. γ-CD formed complexes with poly(methyl vinyl ether) (PMVE), though α-, β-CD did not form complexes with PMVE. α-CD formed complexes with oligoethylene, but only γ-CD formed complexes with polyisobutylene of molecular weight over 500. The structures and properties of the complexes have been studied by spectroscopic methods. Polyrotaxanes in which many CDs are threaded on a single chain were prepared by capping the chain ends with bulky groups.

    • New insights on the structure of hexagonally faceted platelets from hydrophobically modified chitosan and α-cyclodextrin

      2018, International Journal of Pharmaceutics
      Citation Excerpt :

ICs were separated by centrifugation, freeze-dried and recrystallized in phosphate buffer or in water at room temperature (Hwang et al., 2004). For polymers with lower aqueous solubility such as poly(oxytrimethylene) (Harada et al., 1995), poly(oxytetramethylene) (Harada., 1997b), polyesters (Harada, 1997a), sonication was used to accelerate threading. Poly(oxytrimethylene)/α-CD crystals were formed by adding at room temperature a saturated aqueous solution of α-CD (1 ml) containing 145 mg of α-CD to a poly(oxytrimethy1ene) (20 mg) solution.

      Citation Excerpt :

MT is a synthetic derivative of testosterone, soluble in various organic solvents, but practically insoluble in water. It has a moderate potential of bioconcentration in aquatic organisms and the hydrolysis is not an important process of environmental destination for this compound, since it does not have functional groups that hydrolyze under environmental conditions (Han, Ma, Lu, Xue, & Xue, 2012; PUBCHEM, 2014). The major concern with these hormones is that their inadequate use can generate residues above biologically acceptable limits.
