Human dietary exposure to metals in the Niger delta region, Nigeria: Health risk assessment
2022, Environmental ResearchSelecting the best non-invasive matrix to measure mercury exposure in human biomonitoring surveys
2022, Environmental ResearchCitation Excerpt :For exposure assessment to inorganic mercury, most likely in occupational settings, the preferable biomarkers are BHg and UHg. Hair and urine have the advantage of being non-invasive and samples can easily be collected from a large number of individuals (Basu et al., 2018) or when the survey is including children (Batista et al., 1996; Den Hond et al., 2015). Despite being the most frequently used biological matrix, blood sampling is invasive and needs the involvement of medically trained staff for the extraction, being therefore more complicated and expensive to perform at large scale (Esteban and Castaño, 2009).

2022, Environmental ResearchMetal pollution of soil, plants, feed and food in the Niger Delta, Nigeria: Health risk assessment through meat and fish consumption
2021, Environmental ResearchCitation Excerpt :Rapid industrialization and diverse anthropogenic activities have been implicated in the increased release of toxic metals into various environmental matrices (Orisakwe, 2020). Humans are mainly exposed to metals/metalloids through consumption of contaminated food and water, air inhalation, or even contact with contaminated soils (Batista et al., 1996; Qu et al., 2012; Hembrom et al., 2020; Cao et al., 2020). The residents of Niger Delta, Nigeria, are chronically exposed to environmental toxic metals due to the important oil and gas exploration activities in the region.
