    In an alternative mechanism, an insect peroxidase (peroxinectin, Pxt) catalyses formation of PGH2, with the five-membered ring structure that characterizes PGs. The third step depends on cell-specific enzymes that convert PGH2 into any of several PGs, PGE2, for example. Work on eicosanoids in invertebrates was launched by reports on PGs in the gorgonian octacoral, Plexaura homomalla (Weinheimer and Spraggins, 1969). The coral PGs have slightly different structures and occur in very high amounts, from 1.5% to 9% of dry body mass.
