A loss of SOC from topsoils after the conversion of native natural vegetation into cropland is a common phenomenon (Coutinho et al., 2014; Paustian et al., 1997). A much stronger loss was recorded by Pardo et al. (2012) in Tanzania with about 50% loss of SOC stocks after just 10 years of cultivation for the upper 0–10 cm depth, against 38% for this study.
