The sources and persistence of these characteristics, such as defect marks, of photocopy machines has been detailed previously [9–12]. The presence of unintentional printed marks, often referred to as trash marks, result from permanent defects or transient material on the glass platen, the slit glass, the photosensitive drum, or the lid.

Apart from some questioned documents printed by color laser printers can be effectively examined via Machine Identification Code (MiC) [4], it is impossible to effectively examine suspicious printed documents without occasional drum-defect traces [5] or abnormal layouts [6]. This makes it difficult to identify whether printed documents have been tampered with in forensic practice, especially regarding the alterations made with the same printer.
