Abstract

Because half of all nail diseases are not onychomycosis, it is important to consider noninflammatory-based causes of toenail dystrophy, especially in terms of the anatomic structure of the foot and the associated gait cycle. Unique from fingernails, toenail disease may be caused by a variety of issues: trauma from shoes, biomechanical issues and forces relating to gait and foot structure, and infection compounded by shoe gear and adjacent skin conditions to the nails (i.e., interdigital tinea pedis). That said, when a practitioner is considering the diagnosis and management of toenail onychomycosis, the visually similar biomechanical causes of toenail dystrophy must be considered.
