Abstract

Thymoquinone (2-isopropyl-5-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone), which is found in Nigella sativa oil and seeds, is widely used in traditional medicine. It has been suggested to exert important health-beneficial effects including antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and anticancer effects. It has been shown to normalize glutathione levels and to increase the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutases. However, it was demonstrated that thymoquinone causes side effects and interacts with drugs. This chapter aims to provide knowledge on the general information about thymoquinone and its pharmacological and toxic effects on human health.
