Abstract

Packaging of pharmaceutical product is as important as the formulation development of these products. Packaging of pharmaceuticals is an unavoidable parameter from the manufacturer, retailer, and consumer. Pharmaceutical packaging system involves primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging to ensure maximum safety, stability, and efficacy of packed product. Various functions of packaging include identification and protection of a product from environmental and transportation stress. Nowadays, pharmaceutical products are coming with different features such as tamper-resistant packaging or child-resistant packaging for the various pharmaceutical dosage forms. However, modernization of the packaging technology calls for upgrading of packaging methodologies to meet the demands of the market and make user-friendly packaging. This chapter encompasses different variants of packaging materials such as glass and plastic along with critical discussion on their use and resulting environmental exposure. We also cover global perspectives and regulatory concerns on pharmaceutical packaging with special emphasis on the European Union, United States, Japan, and China.
