2020, Science of the Total EnvironmentCitation Excerpt :Hemicelluloses, the second most abundant polysaccharide in the biosphere after cellulose, are heterogeneous biopolymers of multiple types of sugar units with a variety of glycosidic bonds in one molecule. Unlike cellulose, which is a homopolymer of glucose, a hemicellulose may contain pentoses (e.g. D-xylose and L-arabinose), hexoses (e.g. D-mannose, D-galactose, and d-glucose), uronic acids (e.g. β-D-glucuronic acid, α-D-4-O-methyl glucuronic acid and α-D-galacturonic acid) and several other water-soluble sugars produced during photosynthesis (Hamaker et al., 2018; Pereira, 2008). The amount of each sugar monomer in hemicelluloses typically varies with plant species (Table 1).
Cereal polysaccharides as sources of functional ingredient for reformulation of meat products: A review
2019, Journal of Functional FoodsCitation Excerpt :Hemicellulose is a group of cell wall polysaccharides, accounts for about 20–30% of the total mass of annual and perennial plants (Spiridon & Popa, 2008). This group of polymers is basically made up of pentose and/or hexose sugars like xylose, glucose, mannose, and galactose in the backbone as well as arabinose, galactose, glucose, and glucuronic acid in the branches (Hamaker et al., 2019). Unlike cellulose, hemicelluloses have chiefly β-(1, 4) glycosidic bonds.
