Abstract

This study was carried out to establish the feasibility of the Fourier analysis and fuzzy logic for tool and process monitoring of a milling operation. The dynamics of the measured cutting force component and vibration of a milling machine is investigated to establish the response of the signal variations due to tool wear, tool breakage, entering, exit, harder workpiece material, hole in workpiece, etc. A lot of experiments have already been performed to develop a commercially viable monitoring/diagnostic system for milling and the experiments continue.
