Abstract

Spin dynamics in cuprates is analysed on a framework of a new theory (based on the t-t'-J model and the diagrammatic technique for Hubbard operators) which treats correctly strong electron correlations within CuO₂ layer.

Comparison of antiferromagnetic fluctuations in zinc-free and zinc-doped YBCO in fully oxidized samples. Studies by inelastic neutron scattering

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been carried out to investigate magnetic fluctuations on YBa₂Cu₃O_{6 + x} single crystals as well as on YBa₂(Cu_{1 − y}Zn_y)₃O_{6 + x} (y = 2 %) single crystal for fully oxidized samples. Direct comparaison of the imaginary part of the magnetic susceptibility, χ″(Q_AF, ω), in both systems has been made possible using the same experimental conditions at LLB, Saclay.

Spin dynamics in cuprates is analysed in the framework of a new theory (based on the t-t′-J model and the diagrammatic technique for Hubbard operators) developed to treat correctly strong electron correlations within the CuO₂ plane. The dynamic magnetic susceptibility is determined by two contributions different in nature, the “localized” and “itinerant” ones. The “itinerant” contribution reflects a response in the spin susceptibility on Cu related to the propagating carrier quasiparticles. The “localized” contribution reflects the existence of short-range correlations between localized spins. As a result of their competition, the spin dynamics evolves continuously within the metallic state from a normal-metal behaviour at high doping (overdoped regime) to a quantum spindashliquid-type dynamics with magnondashlike excitations at low doping through a nondashFermi-liquid behaviour in all intermediate regimes. The picture of the spin dynamics in the metallic state of YBa₂Cu₃O_6+x as a whole and in details in relation to INS and NMR experimental data is presented. Many exotic features of $χ(k, ω)$ reveale by these experiments find a natural explanation within the proposed scenario.
Spin dynamics in the metallic state of the high-T<inf>c</inf> superconducting system YBa<inf>2</inf>Cu<inf>3</inf>O<inf>6 + x</inf>

The spin dynamics in single crystals of YBa₂Cu₃O_{6 + x} has been successfully investigated, by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments, as a function of temperature in the metallic state over the whole doping range from the weakly doped (x = 0.45, 0.51) to the heavily doped (x = 0.69, 0.83, 0.92) and the overdoped (x = 0.97, 1) regimes. Dynamical AF-correlations persist in all the metallic state. Actually, the imaginary part of the magnetic susceptibility χ″ consists of two contributions which have different doping and temperature dependences. At low temperature, χ″ exhibits an energy gap in any superconducting samples which becomes much weaker close to the insulating-metallic transition. To emphasize the characteristic features of the spin dynamics in YBCO, INS results obtained by other groups are compared with our experiments. Several theoretical approaches, which intend to describe the energy line shape of the dynamical magnetic susceptibility, are also discussed.
