Abstract

Records of 50 French Alpine and 38 Zaraibi does, and 44 Alpine and 42 (12 Alpine 12 Zaraibi) kids born in Egypt were used in this study. The data were collected from a private farm, located in Sinbelaween, Dakahlia Governorate to study reproductive performance of Alpine and Zaraibi does and growth, conformation and body compactness of purebred Alpine and first cross Alpine × Zaraibi kids.

Zaraibi were superior to Alpine does in fertility, litter size and weaning rates and had fewer abortion and mortality rates. Alpine kids were significantly (P < 0.001) heavier and grew faster than cross-breds. Sex did not significantly (P < 0.05) affect weights and average daily gains (ADG's) of kids, until 150 d of age when male kids were significantly heavier than females (P < 0.05). Single born kids were heavier than twins (P < 0.05) at 10 d of age. Alpine kids had higher coefficients of body compactness (P < 0.001), and coefficients of body conformation (P < 0.05) than cross-breds.

The total goat’s population in Egypt was about 4.2 million heads (FAO, 2010). Egyptian Zaraibi goats originated in the arid hot region of Egypt near the border with Sudan (Mourad, 1993). Also, it is the highest milk production and high prolificacy local breeds (Abdel-Raheam, 1998).

The current flock prolificacy (fecundity) was expressed as twinning rate. Overall the conception rate was comparable to that obtained by Mourad (1993), with a 95 and 90% conception rate for Zaraibi and Alpine does, respectively. These values were however higher than the 52% and 53% reported by Lehloenya et al. (2005) for estrous synchronized and artificially inseminated South African Boer and Nguni does, respectively.
