Abstract

General properties of semi-inclusive reactions induced by polarized leptons on an unpolarized or spin $12$ polarized target are studied from the point of view of kinematics and invariance principles. Structure functions are defined and positivity conditions given.

General tensor structure for electron scattering in terms of invariant responses

Just like in the earlier paper by [3], the 18 response functions (as they are called in a nuclear context) or structure functions (as they are called in a DIS context), are discussed in two specific laboratory frames of reference, the laboratory gamma-lepton frame and the laboratory gamma-hadron frame. The author mentions how to obtain 18 independent functions using constraints following [5], but does not relate the invariant functions with the functions in the specific frames he discusses. In other work Diehl and Sapeta [22] focus on how the polarization is specified, with respect to the lepton beam or the virtual photon direction.
The use of invariant response functions in treatments of electron scattering from hadronic targets is reviewed. Various classes of reaction are treated, building from the simplest (and best known) case of inclusive scattering from unpolarized targets, to more complicated cases involving polarized electrons and possibly polarized spin-1/2 targets. In particular, the general structure of semi-inclusive polarized electron scattering from polarized spin-1/2 targets is emphasized. A summary is presented of how the leptonic and hadronic tensors that enter in the formalism are constructed in a general covariant way in terms of kinematic factors that are frame dependent but model independent and invariant response functions which contain all of the model-dependent dynamics. In the process of reviewing the general problem the relationships to the conventional responses expressed in terms of the frame-dependent helicity components of the exchanged virtual photon are presented.
Transverse spin effects in hard semi-inclusive collisions

The nucleons (protons and neutrons) are by far the most abundant form of matter in our visible Universe; they are composite particles made of quarks and gluons, the fundamental quanta of Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD). The usual interpretation of the nucleon dynamics in high energy interactions is often limited to a simple one-dimensional picture of a fast moving nucleon as a collection of co-linearly moving quarks and gluons (partons), interacting accordingly to perturbative QCD rules. However, massive experimental evidence shows that, in particular when transverse spin dependent observables are involved, such a simple picture is not adequate. The intrinsic transverse motion of partons has to be taken into account; this opens the way to a new, truly 3-dimensional (3D) study of the nucleon structure. A review of the main experimental data, their interpretation and understanding in terms of new transverse momentum dependent partonic distributions, and the progress in building a 3D imaging of the nucleon is presented.
New quark distributions and semi-inclusive electroproduction on polarized nucleons

The quark-parton model calculation including the effects of intrinsic transverse momentum and of all six twist-two distribution functions of quarks in polarized nucleons is performed. It is demonstrated that new twist-two quark distribution functions and polarized quark fragmentation functions can be investigated in semi-inclusive DIS at leading order in Q². The general expression for the cross-section of semi-inclusive DIS of polarized leptons on polarized nucleons in terms of structure functions is also discussed.
Electroproduction of polarized hadrons with polarized beams and targets

Formulas of a general and explicit nature are obtained for electroproduction of any polarized hadron state from a polarized target with a polarized beam. The one-photon exchange approximation is used and the final formulas are given in terms of virtual photon helicities. Formulas are derived for cross sections and for final state spin density matrix elements. The latter enable one to construct any final state polarization parameter or to write out any final state decay distribution with minimal effort. Exclusive and semiinclusive reactions are discussed on an equal basis. All particle spins are assumed to be polarized. Specialization is made to any case of experimental interest by summing over unwanted spin indices. It is hoped that such a general formulation of electroduction kinematics will be of use in the planning of experiments with polarized beams and targets.
How to analyse vector-meson production in inelastic lepton scattering

The kinematics of the process ℓN → ℓNV, is studied in the one-photon approximation for unpolarized as well as polarized leptons ℓ. The vector-meson spin density matrix is expressed in terms of the s-channel helicity amplitudes in the hadron c.m.s. and the vector-meson decay angular distribution is discussed. The use of longitudinally polarized lepton beams is found to increase considerably the amount of information that can be deduced from the decay distribution. With longitudinal beam polarization it is possible to separate all 26 observable independent density matrix elements into contributions from natural and unnatural parity exchange in the t-channel, respectively.
