Abstract

The room-temperature structural, optical and related properties, in the (low frequency) excitonic spectral region, of some single valence metal-halide compounds based on Pb, Sn and Ge are briefly reviewed and some new results are reported. Some similarities with the artificially prepared semiconducting systems were found.

Large-n quasi-phase-pure two-dimensional halide perovskite: A toolbox from materials to devices

Despite their excellent environmental stability, low defect density, and high carrier mobility, large-n quasi-two-dimensional halide perovskites (quasi-2DHPs) feature a limited application scope because of the formation of self-assembled multiple quantum wells (QWs) due to the similar thermal stabilities of large-n phases. However, large-n quasi-phase-pure 2DHPs (quasi-PP-2DHPs) can solve this problem perfectly. This review discusses the structures, formation mechanisms, and photoelectronic and physical properties of quasi-PP-2DHPs, summarises the corresponding single crystals, thin films, and heterojunction preparation methods, and presents the related advances. Moreover, we focus on applications of large-n quasi-PP-2DHPs in solar cells, photodetectors, lasers, light-emitting diodes, and field-effect transistors, discuss the challenges and prospects of these emerging photoelectronic materials, and review the potential technological developments in this area.
Structure, composition, and stability of metal halide perovskites

Metal halide perovskites are a highly divers class of materials due to their wide range of compositions and the varying dimensionality of their metal halide sublattices. These differences are also reflected in the physicochemical properties of these materials which can be further tuned by controlling the crystal growth process. Understanding how the fundamental properties of metal halide perovskites are influenced by these parameters is vital in order to improve them for use in different applications. This chapter reviews the state of the art of metal halide perovskites considering the latest experimental as well as theoretical studies. We describe in depth the different structures of perovskites taking into account their composition as well as the dimensionality of the metal halide sublattice. From this we derive the general electronic structure of these materials and discuss its interplay with their crystal structure. The thermodynamic stability of metal halide perovskites with regard to phase transformation and decomposition and the influence of composition, preparation methods and defects on this crucial property are additional key points in this chapter. All this information is presented to illustrate how the properties of metal halide perovskite materials can be tuned to optimize device performances.
First principles prediction of the carrier mobilities and optical properties of strained lead free perovskite Cs<inf>2</inf>SnX<inf>6</inf>(X=Cl, Br)

Cs₂SnX₆(X = Cl, Br) are non-toxic perovskites and fairly stable in air. However, the broad band gaps limit their applications. The strain is an effective way to regulate the photoelectrical properties. The calculation results show that unstrained Cs₂SnCl₆ and Cs₂SnBr₆ bulk are direct bandgap semiconductors with the band gap of 3.984 eV and 2.491 eV at Γ points. The band gap decreases under compressive strain and increases under tensile strain. Moreover, the electron and hole mobilities of unstrained Cs₂SnCl₆ are 288.33 and 0.007 cm²V⁻¹s⁻¹, the electron and hole mobilities of unstrained Cs₂SnBr₆ are 611.31 and 0.02 cm²V⁻¹s⁻¹. The carrier mobility is greatly enhanced by applying compressive strain. The reason is that the charge localization becomes weaker under compressive strain, resulting in better transmission. Besides, the compressive strains result in the band gaps to become smaller, making the absorption edges of Cs₂SnX₆ (X = Cl, Br) red shifted. Thus the strain can effectively tune the photoelectric properties and facilitate the application of Cs₂SnX₆(X = Cl,Br) perovskite.
Anomalous and colossal thermal expansion, photoluminescence, and dielectric properties in lead halide-layered perovskites with cyclohexylammonium and cyclopentylammonium cations

A detailed study of lead halide-layered perovskites with general formula A₂PbX₄ (where A is cyclohexylammonium (CHA) or cyclopentylammonium (CPA) cation and X is Cl⁻ or Br⁻ anion) is presented. Using variable temperature synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, we observe that these compounds exhibit diverse crystal structures above room temperature. Very interestingly, we report some unconventional thermomechanical responses such as uniaxial negative thermal expansion and colossal positive thermal expansion in a perpendicular direction. For the polymorphs of (CHA)₂PbBr₄, the volumetric thermal expansion coefficient is among the highest reported for any extended inorganic crystalline solid, reaching 480 MK⁻¹. The phase transitions are confirmed by calorimetry and dielectric measurements, where the dielectric versus temperature curves show anomalies related with the order-disorder phase transitions. In addition, these compounds exhibit a broad photoluminescence (PL) emission with a large Stokes shift, which is related with an exciton PL emission.
Investigation of double perovskites Sr<inf>2</inf>SmNbO<inf>6</inf> and X<inf>2</inf>CoNbO<inf>6</inf> (X=Sr,Ba) with SCAN functional and plus U correction

The double perovskites Sr₂SmNbO₆, Sr₂CoNbO₆ and Ba₂CoNbO₆ were investigated with first principles computations based on the density functional theory and plus U treatment. Firstly, different calculation methods were examined in order to quantitatively approach the exact band gap. It was found that neither the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) semilocal density functional nor the hybrid HSE06 functional can well address the semiconducting nature of the investigated double perovskites, while PBE + U or SCAN + U with appropriately determining the U value can have good performance, which paves the way for future studies of double perovskites. With self-consistently calculated electron correlation strength, the magnetic states and the band gaps of the Sr₂CoNbO₆ and Ba₂CoNbO₆ were more precisely determined. The electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties were then investigated and discussed for possible applications.
