Nephroprotective plant species used in traditional Mayan Medicine for renal-associated diseases
2023, Journal of EthnopharmacologyCitation Excerpt :Therefore, extracts from C. edulis or isolated compounds should be carried out to explore the potential of this species as a nephroprotective agent. The leaves of S. torvum have been used to treat kidney pain, kidney infections, and urinary problems (Cáceres et al., 1987; Hitziger, 2016; Orantes-García et al., 2018; Pardo, 2011). Pretreatment of an ethanolic fruit extract (100 and 300 mg/kg) for 4 weeks demonstrated a nephroprotective effect in Wistar rats by reducing the serum creatinine and urea levels, increasing the renal antioxidant system (SOD and CAT), and suppressing the tubular necrosis, renal lesions and glomerular congestion induced by doxorubicin compared to the control group (Mohan et al., 2010).
