Abstract

We present the first next-to-leading order calculation of the single jet inclusive cross section at the ep collider HERA. Both the “resolved” and “direct” contributions are calculated to this order. We verify that our results are much less sensitive to the choice of renormalisation/factorisation scales than the leading order results. We examine the possibility of using this cross section to measure the parton distribution functions of the photon, in particular the poorly known gluon distribution.

Survey of present data on photon structure functions and resolved photon processes

Present data on the partonic content of the photon from LEP, TRISTAN and HERA accelerators are reviewed and the essential aspects of the underlying ideas and methods are pointed out. Results of the unpolarized photon structure function F₂^γ from DIS_eγ experiments and on large p_T jet production processes in the resolved γγ collisions are presented for both real and virtual photons. The results of analysis of the hadronic final state accompanying the DIS_eγ measurements, showing some discrepancies with the Monte Carlo models, are collected together and presented as a separate issue. Also results on the DIS_eγ with leptonic final states are shown. The results from resolved real and virtual photon processes at HERA collider based on the single- and double-jet events, also charged particles and prompt photons, are presented. In the context of virtual photon processes the data for forward jet and forward particle production are included. In addition, a short presentation of the recent data on the heavy quark content of the photon is given. Related topics – the polarized (spin-dependent) structure functions for the real and virtual photon, the structure function of the electron and the photonic content of the proton are also shortly mentioned.

A direct determination of the gluon density in the proton at low x

A leading order determination of the gluon density in the proton has been performed in the fractional momentum range 1.9 · 10⁻³ < x_g/p < 0.18 by measuring multi-jet events from boson-gluon fusion in deep-inelastic scattering with the H1 detector at the electron-proton collider HERA. This direct determination of the gluon density was performed in a kinematic region previously not accessible. The data show a considerable increase of the gluon density with decreasing fractional momenta of the gluons.
Cross sections for charm production in ep collisions: massive versus massless scheme

The next-to-leading order inclusive cross section for large-p_⊥ photoproduction of charm quarks at HERA is calculated in two different approaches. In the first approach the charm quarks are treated as massive objects which are strictly external to the proton and the photon while in the second approach the charm mass is neglected and the c quark is assumed to be one of the active flavours in the proton and photon structure functions. We present single-inclusive distributions in transverse momentum and rapidity including direct and resolved photons. The cross section in the massless approach is found to be significantly larger than in the massive scheme. The deviation originates from several contributions which are disentangled. We argue that large-p_⊥ photoproduction of charm quarks at HERA will be sensitive to the charm content of the photon structure function.
Inclusive parton cross sections in photoproduction and photon structure

Study of D<sup>*</sup> (2010)<sup>±</sup> production in ep collisions at HERA

We report the first observation of charmed mesons with the ZEUS detector at HERA using the decay channel $D^{∗+} → (D^{0} → K^{−} π^{+})π^{+} (+c.c.)$ . Clear signals in the mass difference $ΔM=M(D^{∗})−M(D^{0})$ as well as in the M(Kπ) distribution at the D⁰ mass are found. The ep cross section for inclusive D^∗± production with Q² < 4 GeV² in the γp centre-of-mass energy range 115 < W < 275 GeV has been determined to be (32±7₋₇⁺⁴) nb in the kinematic region _pt(D^∗) ≥ 1.7 GeV, $|η(D^{∗})| < 1.5$ . Extrapolating outside this region, assuming a mass of the charm quark of 1.5 GeV, we estimate the ep charm cross section to be $σ(ep → c c X) = (0.45 ± 0.11_{−0.22}^{+0.37})$ μb at $s =296$ GeV and 〈W〉 = 198 GeV. The average γp charm cross section $σ(γp → c c X)$ is found to be (6.3 ± 2.2_−3.0^+6.3) μb at 〈W〉 = 163 GeV and (16.9 ± 5.2_−8.5^+13.9) μb at 〈W〉 = 243 GeV. The increase of the total charm photoproduction cross section by one order of magnitude with respect to low energy data experiments is well described by QCD NLO calculations using singular gluon distributions in the proton.
