Abstract

We compare the behaviour of a neutrino beam that is an incoherent mixture of νe and νμ with that of a coherent superposition. The two are distinguished by differences in the time evolution of their density matrices. As an illustration we consider the change in the flavour composition of a neutrino beam passing through the earth, and show that coherent and incoherent mixtures are transformed in different ways.
