Zinc supplementation for the treatment or prevention of disease: Current status and future perspectives
2008, Experimental GerontologyCitation Excerpt :In addition, there are case studies that describe a beneficial effect of zinc treatment on patients with anorexia nervosa (Bryce-Smith and Simpson, 1984; Safai-Kutti and Kutti, 1986). Due to similarities of the symptoms of patients with zinc deficiency and anorexia nervosa, it has been suggested that zinc nutrition is involved in the etiology of this disorder (Bakan, 1979), but it should also be considered that the observed low serum zinc values may simply be a result of dietary inadequacy (Sandstead, 1986). Many of these reports seem promising, however they usually only represent single studies, sometimes with low numbers of participants.
