The impact of climate-change induced temperature increases on the suitability of street tree species in California (USA) cities
2018, Urban Forestry and Urban GreeningCitation Excerpt :The potential span of locally-unsuitable trees – possibly up to 82, but likely no less than 55 species – represent a substantial fraction of common urban species identified by Ritter (“about 150″; 2011, p. xiv), and include some species that are nearly ubiquitous in California’s cities, such as B. pendula, L. styraciflua, P. x hispanica, P calleryana, and S. sempervirens. Although some of these are disfavored at present (e.g., L. styraciflua – now avoided for its pavement-damaging roots; McBride and Jacobs, 1976), they remain prominent in many low-density residential neighborhoods as a result of past planting patterns, and their loss would be immediately noticeable. Conversely, of the species in the Table 3, only three (Dictyosperma album, Quercus hemisphaerica, and Senna surattensis) could be considered unusual, as they are not listed in Ritter’s 2011 book; yet even these three species may be locally common and their loss important in some cities.
