2021, Advances in NeurotoxicologyCitation Excerpt :Experiments using subtoxic concentrations of the analogue 42-OH-palytoxin (Cabrera-García, 2017; Del Favero et al., 2011) gave similar results, confirming the key role of Na+/K+-ATPase activity in the observed modulation of the response to domoic acid. Diminished Na+/K+-ATPase activity has been observed in the ischemic brain (Gottron and Lo, 2009; Major et al., 2017; Mintorovitch et al., 1994) as well as after episodes of hypoglycemia, epilepsy, mechanical injury and after administration of glutamate agonists (Lees, 1991; Schlingmann et al., 2018; Tavalin et al., 1997). The modulation by palytoxin of non-NMDA receptor-mediated neuronal response may have therefore important implications in neuronal function and dysfunction in the brain.
