Rethinking human ethology: A response to some recent critiques

Abstract

As Tinbergen pointed out a quarter of a century ago, ethology employs many levels of investigation. Studies of psychological adaptations, and of current fitness functions, are two of them. All of these investigations are valid, none is intrinsically most important, and each can be enhanced by the others.

Culture and the evolution of social learning

Applications of modern evolutionary theory to human culture have generated several different theoretical approaches that challenge traditional anthropological perspectives. “Cultural selection” and “mind parasite” theories model culture as an independent evolutionary system because transmission of cultural traits via social learning is distinct from transmission of genes via DNA replication. “Dual-inheritance” and “co-evolution” theories model culture as an intermediary evolutionary process that involves information from two inheritance systems: genetics and social learning. “Evolutionary psychology” theories emphasize that the evolutionary history of natural selection on mental processes links culture and biological adaptation; hence, cultural information is viewed as part of the organic phenotype and not an independent evolutionary system. Cross-cultural universals and scenarios of the “environment of evolutionary adaptedness” are used to identify characteristics of the “evolved mind” (human nature). “Behavioral ecology” theories examine relations between behavior and environmental context. Behavioral/cultural variations are viewed as products of flexible decision-making processes (evolved mind) that may respond adaptively to micro-environmental differences. It is difficult to devise empirical tests that distinguish among these theories, because they share many basic premises and make similar predictions about human behavior. Indeed, some of the apparent differences may be more semantic than substantive.
Social learning is the key process underlying these evolutionary paradigms. Here I argue that human learning mechanisms are products of natural selection, and hence process information in ways that reflect evolutionary design. I review common objections to this hypothesis, including (1) learning processes are uncoupled from genetics and biological adaptation; (2) culture (or its effects) is partly extrasomatic; (3) culture, by most definitions, involves mental phenomena, including conscious thought; (4) culture involves the use of arbitrary symbols to communicate information; (5) culture appears to have emergent properties at the group level, such as shared values and beliefs resulting in political and religious institutions; (6) culture involves historical processes; and (7) complex culture is uniquely human—we need an explanation for why the human species alone evolved such extensive social learning aptitudes. I suggest that these controversies can be resolved, although empirical tests are difficult.
I posit that social competition was a primary selective pressure on human mental abilities (Alexander 1989) and that this favored domain-general, constructivist learning capabilities (e.g., Quartz and Sejnowski, in press) that can manage context-dependent analysis and integrate information from domain-specific mechanisms (Hirschfeld and Gelman 1994; MacDonald 1991; Sperber 1996). Humans are unique in the extraordinary levels of novelty that are generated by the processing of socially learned information. Human culture is cumulative; human cognition produces new ideas built upon the old. To a degree that far surpasses that of any other species, human mental processes must contend with a constantly changing information environment of their own creation. Cultural information may be especially dynamic because it is a fundamental aspect of human social competition. Apparently arbitrary changes in cultural traits, such as clothing styles, music, art, food, dialects, and so forth, may reflect information arms races among social competitors. The remarkable developmental plasticity and cross-domain integration of some cognitive mechanisms may be products of selection for special sensitivity to variable social context. Human “culture” is not just a pool or source of informational; it is an arena and theater of social manipulation and competition.
Studies of human behavior—including language, kinship, mating relationships, subsistence, economics, and politics—generally are consistent with an evolutionary basis for social learning, but often they fail to add specific new knowledge about the mechanisms. Analyses of cognitive aptitudes underlying language, kinship, and so forth, often are inconclusive because cultural information (and consequent behavior) involves complex interaction among history, environmental variation, ontogenetic pathways of mental processes, and specific context. I suggest that empirical tests of evolutionary culture theory must build upon identification of apparent universals and examine individual variability by incorporating developmental psychology, environmental conditions, and social and historical context. This synthesis would benefit from enhanced cooperation between cognitive psychologist and cultural anthropologist.
Behavior analysis and consumer psychology

The paper examines the epistemological status of a comprehensive model of purchase and consumption derived from a critique of behavior analysis. Part 1 describes the provenance of the model's research program. Part 2 identifies the complexities with which a behavior analytical model of consumer choice contends: verbal behavior and marketing interventions in affluent consumer-orientated economies. Such complexity results in an interpretative account of consumer behavior. In Part 3 the Behavioral Perspective Model of purchase and consumption is described and refined. The model's components — the consumer's learning history, the consumer behavior setting, purchase and consumption responses, and their reinforcing and punishing consequences — are derived and described. Four operant classes of consumer behavior, defined by the environmental contingencies controlling them, are identified: Maintenance, Accumulation, Pleasure and Accomplishment. In Part 4, the model employs these classes in the interpretation of broad sequences of consumer choice. First, consumer behavior is described as a hierarchy of these opérants over the consumer life cycle, exemplified by reference to household saving and financial asset management; the opérant classification is then used to interpret consumer behavior as an evolutionary process, exemplified by the adoption and diffusion of innovations. Finally, the model is evaluated according to the criteria of description, delimitation, generation and integration.
A perspective on Darwinian psychology: The importance of domain-general mechanisms, plasticity, and individual differences

In this paper a theory of Darwinian psychological adaptations as motive dispositions with an affective core is developed, and it is argued that 1) there is significant plasticity in these mechanisms; 2) in addition to domain-specific evolved motive dispositions, there are a variety of domain-general cognitive and emotional mechanisms; 3) humans are capable of developing motive dispositions which are not adaptations; 4) the relationship between evolved motive dispositions and behavior is very tenuous so that the explanatory power of Darwinian psychology is very weak; 5) individual differences in human psychological characteristics are evolutionarily meaningful and are linked to mechanisms which assess the resource value of intraspecific genetic and phenotypic diversity.
Adaptiveness and adaptation

This essay is structured as follows. First, I describe the adaptationist program, or teleonomy, in biology. Second, I review the methodologies of this program. Third, I discuss the role that the environment of evolutionary adaptedness plays in the adaptationist program. Fourth, I argue that studies of the “adaptiveness” of human behavior have not been conceptually anchored in the adaptationist program. Fifth, I analyze two studies of adaptiveness and show why they neither test nor inspire novel hypotheses about the design of the human brain/mind. Finally, I conclude that the “adaptivist” approach to human behavior does not begin with well formed hypotheses about the design of human brain/mind mechanisms and that it consists of procedures that could not test such hypotheses if they were proposed.

Three sensible paradigms for research on evolution and human behavior?

Far from being involved in a fundamental division, the study of evolution and human behavior is fortunate to have three potentially productive paradigms which could usefully coexist. In so far as “Darwinian psychology” (DP) is the study of causal mechanisms, guided by thinking about the tasks the mechanisms must perform, it has a clear place alongside the study of adaptedness. Instead of arguing its right to exist by pointing out problems with “adaptationism,” DP should present its audience with more examples of how DP research can be conducted. Meanwhile, adaptationists might move on from asking whether people behave as if they are maximizing fitness, and decide what to do with their finding that the answer is often “yes.” They might also get actively involved with dual inheritance theory, developing ways to make it yield more predictions.
