Effects of three esca-associated fungi on Vitis vinifera L.: IV. Diffusion through the xylem of metabolites produced by two tracheiphilous fungi in the woody tissue of grapevine leads to esca-like symptoms on leaves and berries
2007, Physiological and Molecular Plant PathologyCitation Excerpt :Certain secondary metabolites of the above fungi proved to be phytotoxic. Several chemical species of α-glucan [13,23–25] and two naphthalenone pentaketides (scytalone and isosclerone), known as metabolites of different fungi [26–32], were produced in vitro [33] and in planta by Pch [25,34] and Tmi [34]. Tested on two grapevine cultivars, these metabolites induced foliar symptoms reminiscent of those shown by the esca-affected vines [25].
