2022, ChemosphereCitation Excerpt :In other words, it is not surprising that controversial findings have been reported on all aspects of the Fe0/H2O system, including the suitability of hybrid systems (e.g. Fe0/sand) for filtration systems (Bi et al., 2009; Ruhl et al., 2012; Cao et al., 2021c; Hu et al., 2021b). Since 1994 when the first peer-reviewed mechanistic discussion by Matheson and Tratnyek (1994) was published, there has never been any convincing report on the contaminant reducing nature of Fe0 (Lipczynska-Kochany et al., 1994; Gillham and O'Hannesin, 1994; Warren et al., 1995; Lee et al., 2004). The adoption of the view that reducing electrons are from Fe0 (electrochemical reaction) was based on a “broad consensus” (O'Hannesin and Gillham, 1998; Cao et al., 2021c; Hu et al., 2021a; Noubactep, 2022) with weak supporting evidence.
