Abstract

The influence of precipitation kinetics during the aging of aluminum alloy 2024 on electrical conductivity, as measured by eddy currents, and on hardness was investigated. Aging temperatures between 21 and 190°C were used and measurements were made on both unstretched and plastically deformed (3% permanent strain) samples. The two techniques, electrical conductivity and hardness, respond in a complementary manner to the varying microstructures that form during different stages of the aging process.

Starink and Wang [15] used to microstructural data to predict yield strength of a material with a reasonable accuracy. Tiryakioglu et al. [16] and Rosen et al. [17] have used hardness and electrical conductivity data respectively to predict the mechanical properties of AA 2024 and Al–7%Si alloys respectively. Nadan and Chihoski [18] have constructed a graph depicting hardness and conductivity data based on the known quenching and ageing parameters for the AA 2219 alloy.

To achieve this, ex situ methods such as transmission electron microcopy (TEM) [4,9], three dimensional atom probe [10,11], and X-ray diffraction [12] have been used to examine the precipitate structure and morphology. Indirect methods such as hardness testing [13], specific resistivity [14], electrical conductivity [15], and differential scanning calorimetry [16] have also been used to provide information associated with the changes in the quantity of the precipitates. From a structure-characterization point of view, an in situ direct investigation of the entire precipitation process over all the relevant length scales, which acts to reveal the morphology and kinetic growth mode of the precipitation phases, remains elusive.

    • Improvement of ultimate tensile strength by artificial ageing and retrogression treatment of aluminium alloy 6061

The behavior previously explained can be seen for all hardness values, showing that correlation may be stated only for individual series, but not for different ageing and retrogression treatments. This is in good agreement with several researchers [21-25], and the ageing temperature variable can be considered to be the responsible of this variation; this may be the cause why the ASTM has not yet published a standard regarding to aluminium hardness and tensile strength correlations. Therefore, for the case of modified aluminium alloys, it is mandatory to test both hardness and tensile strength since there is no standardized relation between them.

Measurements as a function of ageing time at various temperatures were found to exhibit prominent changes and anomalies related to the formation of precipitates. The influence of precipitation kinetics during ageing on hardness in both unstretched and plastically deformed 2024 alloy specimens was investigated by Rosen et al. [19]. Rosen et al. [20] characterized sound velocity and attenuation, eddy current and hardness measurements on precipitation-hardened 2024 alloy subjected to a series of different pre-ageing heat treatments prior to various tempers.
